Gergely Bogányi is regarded as one of the most exceptional pianists. His brilliant technique and deeply expressed artistic interpretations make him an outstanding performer. He started playing the piano at the age of four. He continued his studies at the Liszt Academy in Budapest, then at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and at the University of Indiana in Bloomington USA under professors Lászlo Baranyay, Matti Raekallio, and György Sebok.
Gergely Bogányi has enjoyed success in several national and international competitions. In 1996 he won one of the most distinguished competitions - the International Franz Liszt competition in Budapest . He is a constant guest at recitals in the best halls of Europe and worldwide, and receives invitations to perform with leading orchestras for example with the London Philharmonic in 2004.
He regularly makes radio, TV and CD recordings. In addition to the complete Chopin oeuvre which in 2001 earned him the Hungarian Gramofon price in the category "best concert event and performing artist in Hungary " and a wide range of solo pieces, there are more than thirty piano concertos in his repertoire.
Gergely Bogányi has been appointed a Citizen of Honour in his native town, Vác, at the exceptionally young age of 22. He was awarded the Liszt Prize by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage in 2000, the Cross of Merit of the White Rose of Finland by the President of the Finnish Republic in 2002, and received the highest artistic award of Hungary , the Kossuth Prize, in 2004.
Gergely Bogányi became a Citizen of Honour of Zebegeny in 2007, decorated by the mayor of the city.
Since 2008 Gergely Bogányi has been the director of the School of Music in Szob , Hungary.
